Played in tropical Hawaiian conditions in Dunshaughlin, Na Fianna came out on top by the narrowest of margins in this A League fixture. Dunshaughlin will be waking up on Monday wondering how this result happened, as they led by 6 points midway through the second half after playing some excellent foo...
Under 16 Div 1 Spring league Final Ratoath 3-10 Dunshaughlin 1-13 Dunshaughlin held the upper hand for much of the Division 1 FL League final at Pairc Tailteann but two late goals put Ratoath in front at the finishing post after an absorbing hour’s football. The eventual winners slotted their first goal in the 15th minute when Sean Johnson scored from a narrow angle. The Black and Ambers recovered well to take a three point advantage to the dressing room at half time. The highlight was an exquisite goal from Wes Goodwin whose chip over the advancing keeper from thirty metres nestled in the net with a precision that would make Rory McElroy envious. Paul Briody, Luke Mitchell and Cathal McCormack contributed points to leave Dunshaughlin dominant at the break.
They pushed further ahead early in the second half but a Ratoath rally gradually gnawed away at the lead as Dunshaughlin lost control around the centre and from limited possession, earned, but failed to convert, three difficult free kicks. Ratoath leveled in the closing stages before Matthew Moyles and Mathew Costello with superb points edged Dunshaughlin into what looked like pole positions. Ratoath, however, rallied impressively and netted in the closing stages before applying the final blow with a late late goal.
Despite the loss the team and mentors can be proud of a determined display that almost brought home more silverware. Reaching the final was a notable achievement following a couple of unexpected defeats in the earlier rounds and combined with the performance of the Division 6 side in making the Under 16 semi final the future continues to look bright for those players. Great credit to Ratoath who won two Under 16 titles on the night, capturing the Division 4 title in addition to the premier crown.
