Dunshaughlin V Donaghmore Ashbourne

Dunshaughlin 1-06

Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-10

The home side came away with maximum points in this first round match played in blustery conditions in Ashbourne. Both teams fielded without some of their regular players, but the contest was close throughout. The first half was typical for January. Misplaced passes, poor decision making, and poor shooting. Andy Smith, fresh from celebrating his two-year anniversary with his girlfriend, was bravely dominating the goalmouth area and pulled off an excellent stop after 8 minutes. The first piece of quality came towards the end of the half when both teams scored their first points from play. Adam Kealy kicked an excellent long-range point on 28 minutes and this was followed by a score from former West Brom trainee Eoin Hagarty. Prior to that I.T. genius Tadgh O’Dushlaine had kicked two fine frees, surprisingly.

The second half proved to be much better, with the standard of play being much higher. Ashbourne were the brighter and scored 1-2 early on. Dunshaughlin did battle back. Tigerish corner back Josh Wall was showing well as was part time builder Ben Duggan. What Duggan lacks in scoring ability he makes up for in hard work. Dunshaughlin responded with a goal of their own. Some great build up play saw the ball fall to Fergus Toolan. As the ball bounced to the ground, Toolan managed to get a big toe to it and soccer it to the net! The scoreline read 1-05 to 1-04. Cian Gallogly, who came on at the break, had an excellent outing. The youngster was electric for the half, showing constantly and kicking an excellent point from play before scoring a great free against the wind.

Dunshaughlin tried hard up until the final whistle. Niall Murphy drove forward from the back and substitute Jack Hetherington brought some extra pace on the wing. However, it was Ashbounre who found the scores easier to come by and they ran out four point winners. Dunshaughlin did introduce some of their younger players toward the end for their first piece of senior action and this bodes well for the future.
