Dunshaughlin V Dunboyne

Dunshaughlin 1-09

Dunboyne 4-09

These two local rivals faced off in another tense encounter on Sunday morning in the third last round of the A League. Played in perfect conditions the match was tight throughout and the score line doesn’t reflect the close nature of this contest. Dunshaughlin dominated for large periods but couldn’t manage to convert the numerous chances they created. Fergus Toolan and Cian Gallogly lined out in the full forward line for the away team and they were the main threat. It was Toolan who got Dunshaughlin’s first score, which was an excellently taken goal after brilliant build up play. Quick Jack Hetherington started his first A League game and his pace up and down the left wing was electric. He was involved in some of the best moments for Dunshaughlin in the first half. Dunboyne settled into the match and fired back with a goal of their own. At half time Dunshaughlin trailed by three points, but they did kick 8 wides.

The midfield battle between Jack Crimmins and David Gallagher is like watching one of David Attenborough nature programs. The two men were like two wild animals going toe to toe in the jungle. Not an inch was given or taken. Only the biggest and strongest would prevail. For 60 minutes the two men tussled and fought and wouldn’t lie down. If Attenborough was ever looking for two creatures to study, he could have done worse than pick these two towering midfielders.

Dunshaughlin continued to create. Ray Maloney and David Dunne rampaged forward. Dunne in particular created many openings. Night owl Tommy Johnson put in a great shift and managed to chip in with a point. Gallogly was reliable from his frees and looks an excellent addition to the forwards now his exams are over. Mick Ahern excelled at 6 until he was forced off injured. That was when the game seemed to slip away from Dunshaughlin. Five minutes of madness yielded 3 goals for the home team that ended the tie as a contest.

Dunshaughlin have to regroup as they face a battle to stay in Division 1 of the A League.
