Dunshaughlin V St.Pats

Dunshaughlin 3-09

St. Pats 2-11

Dunshaughlin came out of Stamullen on Monday evening with a narrow one point victory. The result means Dunshaughlin secure Division 1 league football for another year as the finish 9th out of 14 in the table.

After a sluggish start Dunshaughlin began to play some good football with Ray Maloney driving at the heart of the Pats defence. Frees from Fergus Toolan and Cathal O’Dwyer edged the away team in front before Pats pounced for a goal. This seemed to wake Dunshaughlin from their Bank Holiday slumber and after some great play Toolan, whose father TP was devastated after Roscommon’s abysmal performance, drove the ball to the back of the net. Two minutes later Dunshaughlin were awarded a penalty after Cathal O’Dwyer was fouled. The corner forward scored to leave the score line 2-4 to 1-2. Dunshaughlin were well in control and after more terrific build up play, night owl Tommy Johnson scored the third goal for Dunshaughlin. The away team led by 7 at the break.

As the rain came down and underfoot conditions changed, Dunshaughlin were guilty of poor passing and poor shot selection. Pats chipped away with some good scores as Dunshaughlin struggled. From being in control Dunshaughlin were in danger of letting the seven point lead slip. However they gained control again as well taken scores from invisible man Mark Devaney and Niall Byrne.

Dunshaughlin have a lot to work on ahead of their titanic clash against neighbours Ratoath on Monday night in the third round of the Meath SFC.
