Half Time: Dunshaughlin: 2-4 (10) O’ Mahony’s 0-3

A competitive game on a muggy evening where Dunshaughlin held on to win by four points after leading by seven points at halftime.

The opening minutes were frantic with both teams playing free flowing football and Dunshaughlin opening the scoring with a Daragh Byrne point. Dunshaughlins got a bit more breathing room with a Ruairi Kinsella goal. O’ Mahony’s only managed three points in the first half mainly down to the hard work throughout the field by the boys in Black and Amber but especially in the half back line (Alex Arkins, John McDonagh & Fursey Blake) and full back line (Liam O’ Connor, Calum Deehan & Aiden Fraher) who were intercepting many the Navan lads passing and making the going tough for their sharpshooters. Conor Gray won five kickouts in that first half launching many of the home attacks, (Gray won an equal amount of kickouts in the 2nd half).

Dunshaughlin’s second goal was scored by Cillian McCool who rebounded the ball to the net after a great save from the O’ Mahony’s keeper, stopping a wonderful shot on the volley from Colm Keane. Aaron Murphy replaced the injured Robert Walker after 15 minutes and had scored 2 points before the break, Kinsella scoring the other point just before half time.

The 2nd half saw O’ Mahony’s up the ante and really put up the game up to Dunshaughlin. Dunshaughlin coped well with Jack Nestor making a wonderful point blank save early on before he himself switched to play outfield. His replacement Liam O’ Connor also made a fine point blank save later on. Navan scored 1-8 in the 2nd half compared to 0-8 by Dunshaughlin. The Dunshaughlin scores came from Murphy 0-4, Kinsella 0-2, Byrne 0-1 & McDonagh 0-1 from a free. James Traynor played solid throughout partnering Gray in the middle. Dunshaughlin kept cool heads and in general their decision making was good even when the pressure came on. Substitutes Charlie O’ Connor & Moustafa Saadon played well when introduced.
