The first round of the Minor (under 17) Summer League had Dunshaughlin travelling to Ardcath to play an amalgamation of St. Vincents of Ardcath and Curraha.

Dunshaughlin playing with a light breeze behind them opened the scoring with a beautiful long range point from Calum Deehan and up until the 25th minute of the first Dunshaughlin appeared to be heading for a convincing win dominating most of the play which was reflected on the scoreboard showing a 10 point lead, 2-6 (12) to 0-2.

Dunshaughlin’s opening goal was scored by Daragh Byrne after a hand pass from Ruairi Kinsella, Kinsella himself stepped up to score Dunshaughlin’s second goal from the penalty spot after Jared Rushe was hauled down bearing down on goal.

The other Dunshaughlin scores in that first 25 minutes came from Kinsella (0-2), Colm Keane, James Traynor & Aaron Murphy (0-1 each). The full back line of Jeff Wall, Aiden Fraher & Charlie O’ Connor were playing well as unit and the half back line of Deehan, Ciaran McCarrick & Kinsella were attacking at pace. Conor Gray combined with James Traynor were winning most of the duels at midfield.

A lapse in concentration from Dunshaughlin in the last five minutes of the half including turning the ball over to their opponents led to the home team scoring two goals before half time slashing the Dunshaughlin lead to four points.

The home team got confidence from the way they finished the first half and came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half scoring three wind assisted points from play and following up with a goal to go into the lead for the first time. To Dunshaughlin’s credit when the game was put up to them, they responded well and began to take control again with another Daragh Byrne goal either side of pointed frees from Kinsella and Murphy. Murphy scored another Dunshaughlin goal midway through the half after nice play from Fursey Blake and Charlie O’ Connor. Dunshaughlin were unlucky not to go further ahead when Cian McLouglin’s effort went just wide. The boys in Black and Amber were working hard, Jared Rushe’s & Traynor’s tackling was ferocious and both were forcing turnovers, Cillian McCool was fielding well and got a mark from one of their kickouts, Donagh McCarrick was proving to be very difficult for the home team forwards to get past and Mousta Saadon was unlucky not to score.Dunshaughlin were well worth their 6 point victory and there was a lot of positives to take from this first outing of the summer league.
